Cleveland School Fire

The School was to close after that night but it ended in another way!

On a certain date in Kershaw County, local citizens entered a little schoolhouse outside of Camden SC, for a Children's play, but some of them would not return home that dreadful night. A fire that was caused by a ceiling oil lamp that fell to the floor took seventy-seven lives that terrible night! Their souls now rest in peace, however, the memory of these shocking hours lives on.

Of those that escaped, two of them were my relatives:

David C. Dixon Sr. and Lois D. Rush

The rest of their immediately family departed that fateful night on May 17, 1923. There were many others families in this small, but caring neighborhood that experienced what our minds can't fully imagine:

"The Cleveland Schoolhouse Fire!"
